Benedict Haven
St. Petersburg, Florida
|
Benedict Haven is a non-profit, long-term, residential group home in St. Petersburg, Florida, for persons so severely and chronically mentally ill they may never be able to: transition into the community; live on their own; hold a job; or, remember to take their medications.
It too just 30 months for Benedict Haven to go from "dream-to-reality" primarily by the enthusiasm, energy, and excitement generated by two dedicated women. Whether politician, provider, priest, police officer, or the public, every visitor to Benedict Haven leaves extremely impressed and believing that this is how all residences of this kind should look and be operated.
Never have so few done so much in such a short period of time for the most vulnerable of the vulnerable. In March 2000, Benedict Haven opened with six residents, all of whom have been in the system a long time. It is hoped that this initial "home" will be the model for many more facilities in the future.
The six "guys" who live at Benedict Haven really like it there. All are doing well. They love to get visitors and actually give the "tours" of their new "home." Every day of the week is an "Activities Day." Some are participating in activities for the first time in their adult life e.g. bowling, playing pool, kareoke, arts & crafts, etc.
